 | | The Oceana 2007 show, "Accelerate Your Weekend" required significant adjustments due to the loss of Jim LeRoy in July 2007 and the loss of one of the Skytypers, Jan Wildbergh during the practice show on Friday. Your host, CDR Richard “Corky” Erie describes the situation and some of the changes that were required. In the Friday Night Show segment, you see portions of the Legacy Hornet demonstration with LCDR Thomas “Natty” Clark, part of the F-22A Raptor demo, and an amazing night display of light and power by Shock Wave.
The air show opening featured Sean Carroll flying a Russian YAK-9, rebuilt from new parts discovered after WWII and Dale Snodgrass flying a P-51 Mustang, the fleet launch, parachute jump, fleet fly by and the air power demonstration. We then see a detailed exploration of the Legacy Hornet (F/A-18C)demo piloted and described by LCDR Paul “BoBo” Felini”. This demo, flown for many years, includes some very nice moves and pushes the Hornet to its limits. These issues are described; the Legacy Hornet demo will have much more significance after seeing this demonstration.
The Air Force “Hour of Power” is described by CDR Erie, and includes the F-15E Strike Eagle demo, an interview with Maj. Paul “Max” Moga, the pilot and developer of the F-22A Raptor demo. You then see the full Raptor demo with Maj. Moga’s detailed descriptions. Following is the Heritage Flight with further descriptions, and then the Dueling Sabre vs. Mustang. It had been intended that this segment be flown with 2 F-86s, but shortly before the show, Dale’s Sabre had a catastrophic engine failure. Dale obtained a P-51 for the show, and the first part of the demonstration was an amazing tight formation show flown with the Mustang and Sabre, followed by solo segments from each aircraft.
We also see the Super Hornet demo and Legacy Flight. Also seen are Skip Stewart flying a highly modified Pitts, both solo and in “Lamb Chop” with Scott Shockley in Shockwave. This event was presented as a tribute to Jim LeRoy; CDR Erie was a passenger in Shock Wave and describes some of his impressions of that very fast ride.
Manfred Radius in his Salto Sailplane and Rob Holland are also seen.
The Blue Angels close the Oceana show, but by 4 pm. the light deteriorates significantly. This year, we decided to try something different; in the Blue Angels segment, we present a collection of Blue Angels footage taken in practice when the light is better along with some segments from the show. To conclude the show, the Blue Angels flew a Missing Man formation, in honor of LCDR Kevin “Kojak” Davis, lost earlier this season at Bufort, SC, and Jan Wildbergh.
